Template information:
The Boeing B-29 Superfortress is an American four-engine piston-powered heavy bomber used by the US Air Force during World War II and the Korean War. The name was given in reference to its predecessor - the B-17 Flying Fortress and was designed for high-altitude strategic bombing, but also excelled at night bombing with low-altitude incendiary bombs or dropping naval mines during the blockade of Japan. The B-29 also dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which contributed to the end of World War II.
Production of the B-29 was discontinued after World War II, with the last Boeing being completed by the Boeing Renton plant on May 28, 1946. Many aircraft were stored, then declared surplus, and eventually scrapped as surplus. Others remained in active inventory and were equipped with strategic air command when it was formed on March 21, 1946. In particular, the modified Silverplate 509 aircraft remained the only aircraft capable of delivering an atomic bomb, and the unit was involved in a series of Operation Crossroads tests. B-29 Dave's Dream dropped a "Fat Man" bomb in Test Able on July 1, 1946.
