Template information:
Santa María was the largest of the three ships used by Christopher Columbus on his first voyage across the Atlantic in 1492. Its owner was Juan de la Cosa. Two more caravels, Pinta and Niña, took part in the expedition.
It served as a command and supply ship for Columbus' expedition. The crew consisted of 40 men. Santa María was the flagship, but the slowest of Columbus' ships. The ship had a complete deck (smaller ships had only a partial deck) and three masts.
According to some sources, the ship was about 40 meters long and 8 meters wide. According to other sources, the ship was 22.6 meters long, 7.6 meters wide and 2.1 meters long.
In 1492, the ship sailed along Haiti, leaving only a lifeguard at the helm; the other crew members rested after the stormy Christmas celebrations. [2] On December 25, the ship ran aground off the coast of today's city of Limonade and sank the next day. The crew survived, most of the crew established the colony of La Navidad (Christmas). The shipwreck was largely dismantled and used in the construction of La Navidad.
The ship's anchor has been preserved and is on display at the Musée du Panthéon National Haïtien (MUPANAH), Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
