The Tornado project arose from a collaboration between Italy, Germany and the United Kingdom to design a high-performance multi-role fighter. Thus, a twin-engine aircraft with a two-seater configuration and wings with variable geometry was developed to better respond to its main role: a low-altitude supersonic fighter-bomber capable of "tracking" the terrain profile. The Tornado IDS (Interdictor / strike) was the first to be used by the British Air Force's GR.1 air traffic units.
