The Liberator was produced in greater numbers than any other American aircraft and enjoyed a long and successful career with both American and Allied air forces. Although it was never as impressive as the B-17 Fortress, with which it participated in heavy daytime bombing missions over Europe, it nevertheless proved itself to be a very capable bomber.

At the beginning of February 1942, modernized B-24D aircraft began to be delivered, the equipment of which was constantly improved and perfected. The last B-24Ds carried the new spherical Sperry gun turret under the fuselage. From the total production of 2738 pieces, the RAF and Coastal Command took 366 examples as Liberator Mk.III from April 1942. A further 147 aircraft modified for maritime patrol service, designated Liberator GR Mk.V, were taken over by the RCAF, RAAF and Coastal Command.
