Description

The Royal Army expressed a need in the years before World War II to have mechanized artillery units capable of supporting infantry and armored units. The self-propelled 75/18 was developed on the chassis of the "M" medium tank, which proved to be the most feared Italian armored vehicle of the Allies during the conflict. With its casemate-mounted 75 mm howitzer, it proved to be an effective anti-tank weapon capable of destroying even the most powerful and heavily armored British and American tanks. However, during the war, the Royal Army requested the development of a version with increased offensive capacity. A 75/34 cannon designed for anti-tank fire was then installed on the body of the M42 self-propelled tank. The first copies were distributed to Italian units in the spring of 1943. Due to its good operational performance, it was also used by German Wehrmacht units after the armistice in September 1943.
