Panzerkampfwagen V Panther (SdKfz 171) was a German tank produced in 1942-1945. The Panther embodied the German answer to the Russian T-34/76 tank. It surpassed it both by the strength of the armor and especially by the performance and accuracy of the 7.5 cm KwK 42 L/70 gun, which should have been able to destroy the T-34 at a distance of 3,000 meters. The Panther is often referred to as the best medium tank of the Second World War, but this is a somewhat contradictory statement, because its weight corresponds to a heavy tank, similar to the Soviet IS-2 or the American M26 Pershing. The Panther excelled in its mobility and maximum speed of 55 km/h. The tank used slanted armor, which in some places reached a thickness of up to 80 mm. The Panther was deployed for the first time in the Battle of Kursk, but this was done without prior testing and elimination of deficiencies. So in the end, their performance was rather disappointing. Ausf.D was the first version of the Panther, 842 machines were produced from January to September 1943.
