The Macchi MC 202 Folgore was a decisive innovation for the fighter department of the Regia Aeronautica. From an aerodynamic point of view, it was extremely beautiful. It was equipped with powerful German in-line DB 601 engines manufactured under license by the Italian aerospace industry. Flight performance was actually much better compared to previous generation radial-engined fighters such as the Fiat G-50 and Macchi Mc-200. Maneuverable and fast (it reached 600 km / h) it was armed in the first versions with two 12.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns installed on the head. Only in later versions was the armament improved to make it more suitable for aerial combat against American and British fighters.
