McDonnell Douglas F / A-18 Hornet is a twin-engine, supersonic natural phenomenon, carrier -capable, multi-purpose combat jet, designed as a fighter and attack aircraft (ie F / A designation).

The F / A-18C and D models are the result of a 1987 upgrade, which includes improved radar, avionics and the ability to carry new missiles, such as the AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missile, the AGM-65 Maverick missile, the AGM-84 Harpoon guided missiles. Other improvements include the Martin-Baker NACES (Navy Aircrew Common) ejection seat and a self-defense jammer. The synthetic aperture of the ground mapping radar allows the pilot to locate targets with reduced visibility. Models C and D, delivered since 1989, have also improved night attack capabilities, consisting of the Hughes Thermal Navigation Pad AN / AAR-50, the Loral AN / AAS-38 NITE Hawk FLIR (forward-looking infrared field) aiming pad, night vision goggles and two full color (formerly monochrome) multifunction display (MFD) and color moving maps.

Production of the C and D models ended in 2000. The last F / A-18C was assembled in Finland and delivered to the Finnish Air Force in August 2000. The last F / A-18D was delivered to the US Marine Corps in August 2000.

In April 2018, the US Navy announced the elimination of the F / A-18C from combat roles after the last deployment, which ended the previous month.
