The Boeing EA-18 G Growler was designed to meet the specific requirements of the US Navy. The goal was to enter service with a specialized airborne electronic warfare aircraft to replace the aging Grumman EA-6B Prowler. The Growler is directly derived from the F/A-18 F Super Hornet tandem fighter. It retains all its main aerodynamic properties and characteristics. Its General Electric engines allow the Growler to reach a top speed of mach 1.8, and its flight performance is similar to that of a mainline aircraft. The 2-man crew consists of a pilot and a WSO (Weapon System Officer). Instead of the F/A-20's 18 mm cannon, the Growler has a special electronic warfare system mounted on it. In addition, the Growler can carry high- and low-band jamming pods, additional fuel tanks, and AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles.
