The Bell UH-1 Iroquois (also known by the widespread nickname "Huey") is an American utility helicopter from the second half of the 1950s. The first prototype took off on October 22, 1956, serial production began in 1959. The machine is designed mainly to transport airborne troops, to protect and fire support airborne operations, to evacuate the wounded, to transport provisions and ammunition, to air reconnaissance, as a flying command post, or as a school, connecting, rescue or transport helicopter. It has also spread in the civilian sector.
