The second generation of the BMW Z4 was unveiled at the annual Detroit Auto Show in December 2008. It is the successor to the first generation Z4 with the designation BMW Z4 E85. It has a solid aluminum folding roof.
The model range is available in five basic configurations. The sDrive 18i, sDrive 20i and sDrive 28i are equipped with a 4-cylinder engine from 115 to 180 kW. They have a 6-speed manual transmission or an optional 8-speed sports automatic transmission.
sDrive 35i and sDrive 35is are equipped with a 6-cylinder engine with power from 225 to 250 kW. They have a 7-speed automatic two-clutch transmission.
The solid aluminum folding roof is electro-hydraulically operated. In the folded position, it is stored in the rear of the car and covers the storage space from above. This reduces the load capacity when the roof is folded down.
