Template information:
The RAF already used several Phantoms, which were originally intended for service in the Royal Navy, at Leuchars Air Base in Fife. When the HMS Ark Royal was withdrawn from service in 1978, the RAF inherited the rest of the Phantom Squadron from the Fleet Air Arm. Squadrons 43 and 111 have since used the Phantom FG.1 to defend British airspace until 1989, when they both switched to the new BAe Tornado F.3.
