Information about the template:
Undoubtedly one of the most significant aircraft in aviation history, the Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR.1 was developed from the experimental Hawker P.1127 aircraft built to test V/STOL vectored thrust flight capabilities. The first of them was the Marine Corps of the United States of America, which became interested in this machine around 1969, when it was first put into service with the RAF. Hawker Siddeley then made some modifications to the aircraft and in 1971 the AV-8A Harrier entered the US Marine Corps as a close air support aircraft.
Operating from amphibious assault ships, the Harrier was designed to increase the effectiveness of the actions of the US Navy's larger warplanes by providing immediate close air support to combatant units, in much the same way that helicopters are used, only with heavier weapons.
Later, from 1979, the AV-8A variants were upgraded to the AV-8C specification. At that time, their combat effectiveness had already been proven in a number of military exercises and their perfect controllability in simulated air battles with F4 Phantom fighters. Today, the US Marine Corps uses the AV-8B Harrier II variant.
