The Gloster Gladiator occupies a very important place in the history of the British Royal Air Force. Although it was the last combat biplane in active service, it also boasted some modern elements, such as a closed cockpit, the first ever RAF aircraft, or armament in the form of four machine guns. When the war broke out, the Gladiator was still in active service and, even as a biplane, proved very successful, but he did not have many chances against his more modern monoplane opponents. Some of the Gladiators, planes piloted by some of Britain's most famous pilots such as Pat Pattle and Roald Dahl, have survived to this day and can still be seen at air shows in Duxford and Old Warden.
