The P-47 Thunderbolt was an American fighter aircraft, at the time becoming the largest and heaviest single-engine single-engine fighter with a piston engine, and this is still true today.
P-47N
The war in the Pacific demanded larger fighter ranges than in Europe. The USAAF placed an order for 1,900 P-47Ns on June 20, 1944. It was equipped with a new long-span wet wing that had square wingtips like the XP-47N. Two days before the first flight of the prototype, many more orders followed, deliveries began in September 1944. 1,816 P-47Ns were produced in six production units, while orders for another 5,934 aircraft were canceled after VJ Day. The last P-47 rolled off the production line in December 1945.
