The Grumman F3F was the third fighter aircraft developed by Grumman for the US Navy.
The first prototype F3F-2 took off on July 21, 1936. They were to be a bridging type until the arrival of modern fighter monoplanes Brewster F2A Buffalo and Grumman F4F Wildcat. This version was powered by a new Wright R-1820-22 Cyclone engine with an output of 950 hp, which this time spun a three-bladed propeller. The engine ring had a larger diameter and, unlike the F3F-1, a smooth surface. An oil cooler was placed under it. Another change was a larger turn signal and a new canopy. The VF-6 squadron on the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CV-6) and the USMC VMF-1 and VMF-2 took over as the first operational.
